Open Burning

Local Burning Requirements

The village you live in may have specific ordinances regarding burning regulations and open fire. Please refer to your local government’s office for more information.

The Harrison Township Fire Department does not issue burn permits. If you plan on doing any lawful burning, of any kind, please contact the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office and notify them the address (or nearest address) of the burn location, approximate size of the burn and a contact name and phone number for the person who will be attending the fire along with the name and contact number of the property owner (if different). You do not need to call the fire department and notify us of lawful burning activity.

If any burning activity involves prohibited materials, occurs during prohibited times or is a nuisance to the public (smoke entering neighbors homes, smoke blowing across roadways, etc.) it will be extinguished by the fire department.

The Fire Chief has the authority under the Ohio Fire Code (307.1.2) to issue a burn ban for the the jurisdictional boundaries of the Harrison Township Fire Department when environmental, atmospheric or drought conditions exist which would increase the danger for fire.

Notifying Ohio EPA

If the burn activity you will be conducting requires permission or notification of Ohio EPA you may do so using their online Open Burning Permission Request Form.

The Fire Department is notified of all burning requests that are granted by the Ohio EPA in advance of the planned burn date. Any fire occurring outside of the allowed permit issued by Ohio EPA will be extinguished and Ohio EPA will be notified.
